Mike secures Seniors' title as

ST MELLION'S Mike Marshall was crowned Cornwall Seniors champion after a thrilling climax to the tournament at Roserrow on Friday.

At the end of the 18-hole championship three players were tied on gross 80, the Cornwall Seniors captain having to rely on countback to lift the title from Peter Marshall, also from St Mellion, and Tehidy Park's Dave O'Mahony, with Colin Ross (Falmouth) fourth on 81.

Ben Westgate (Trevose) and Tom Murtagh (Truro) tied for 16th place in the prestigious Berkshire Trophy at the weekend.

Westgate made the cut comfortably after rounds of 70 and 72 before going on to card 73 and 72 for a level par 287 total.

Murtagh looked on his way out of the event after shooting a first round 78 but fought back with a superb 68 to just make the cut. He continued his good form with two more sub par rounds of 71 and 70.

China Fleet's Tom Fox failed to make the cut after rounds of 79 and 76.

Five professionals and one amateur from Cornwall teed off at Ferndown in Dorset on Monday in the Regional Qualifying round for next month's Open Championship at St Andrews.

If they make the cut, St Mellion's Jack Stevenson and James Ruth, Trevose's Grant Slater and Gary Lenaghan and Mullion's Nick Martin, along with Truro amateur and former county champion Tom Murtagh, will progress through to the local final qualifying stage to be played in Scotland on June 29. Trevose touring pro Phil Rowe missed the cut by a frustrating one shot after shooting rounds of 73 and 74 in the Open de Normandie on the Allianz Golf Tour at Saint Saens last week. He seemed to be on track to qualify for the final two rounds before a double bogey at the short 17th was to prove costly. He was hoping for better luck at Lys, near Paris, on Monday when he attempted to qualify for next week's French Open. Result in next week's column.

St Mellion touring pro Adam Frayne finished in a tie for 28th place in the PGA EuroPro Tour's Dunlop Masters 2010 event at Bovey Castle last week.

His rounds of 72, 70 and 71 left him on a three over par total of 213 and earned him a pay cheque of Pounds 308. On Monday Frayne set out on the first stage of trying to qualify for this year's Open Championship at St Andrews when he teed off at the East Sussex National in the regional qualifying round.

Miliband says Scots Labour mus

Army plans new force to counte

Almost 50 years after the Chinese aggression, the Indian army is finally looking to set up its own rapid reaction force (RRF) at its border in the northeast. The Chinese army already has 23 RRFs.

India has nine mountain divisions to counter China, but has no RRF - elite units that can be mobilised quickly. The plan for setting them up was drawn up by the military operations directorate and sent to certain formations for discussions and feasibility study.
