Avatar and its Greek connection

Avatar has become the top grossing movie in history with almost $2 BILLION in international ticket sales.  Fox International has hit a grand slam with this film and it quickly surpassed the 10 year old record of the Titanic.  Both films are sales Fox International productions.

Did you know......

Fox CEO,  Jim Gianopulos was 150% behind the Avatar project since it’s inception and once again Mr. Gianopulos backed the right project.  It seems like everything he touches turns into gold.

Avatar director James Cameron once again collaborated with Greek-American screenwriter and executive producer, Laeta Kalogridis.  The 43 year old Klogridis is no stranger in Hollywood, she sold her first script (an epic about Joan of Arc) while she was still in film school at UCLA.

Last year, Kalogridis became the first female writer to work on a Martin Scorsese directed film, the upcoming “Shutter Island”.

Greek ship released by pirates

The Greek-owned shipping vessel "Filitsa" that has been held by Somali pirates for three months has finally been freed.  It was freed after an aircraft dropped an undisclosed amount of ransom money onto the ship’s deck.

Last month, a Greek-flagged oil tanker and its crew were released by Somali pirates after receiving a ransom payment of a 3.8-million-euro!

The ship and its crew were reportedly in good health.

Restaurant 'complete loss' in 4-alarm Greektown fire

February 1, 2010 4:15 AM

It took firefighters more than three hours overnight to extinguish an extra-alarm fire that left a Greektown restaurant a total loss and heavily damaged an adjacent building, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called out to the 2-story building that houses Costas Greek Dining & Bar at 340 S. Halsted St., about 11:35 p.m., said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The fire was put out shortly after 3 a.m.

The fire quickly rose from 3-alarm status to 4 when it spread to the building to the north. That building houses three businesses--Athens Grocery, the Pan Hellenic Pastry Shop and Greektown Gift and Music Shop.

The cause of the blaze is unknown. Fire officials are investigating. (Read what diners have had to say about Costas on chicago metromix.com)

Brent Sonin, a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, smelled smoke and walked over with friends from his residence hall.  They arrived to find flames pouring from the roof. He said he saw firefighters opening the roof with axes and breaking out all the windows.

"We had to leave because the smoke was too thick," Sonin said.

Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis described the restaurant as "a complete loss."

A two-block radius around the restaurant was closed to traffic. Jackson Boulevard and Van Buren Street was blocked westbound from Halsted Street, and Halsted was blocked in both directions between Harrison and Adams streets. They will be closed for most of the morning, for the cleanup and investigation, Curtis said.

The CTA rerouted its No. 8 Halsted and No. 126 Jackson buses.

No injuries were reported, Curtis said.

Haze and a strong odor of smoke was reported throughout the early morning by residents of the South Loop area.

About 45 fire companies were called to the scene, with more 150 fire personnel assisting in fighting the fire, Curtis said.

My Big Fat Sell-Off

Greek government bonds
My big fat sell-off
A successful bond issue provides only temporary respite

Jan 28th 2010 | From The Economist print edition

The Greek finance minister, George Papaconstantinou, must feel like a man who finds a one-euro coin on the pavement only to discover he had earlier dropped a five-euro note. Worries about Greece’s public finances seemed to recede on January 25th when it raised €8 billion ($11 billion) in an issue of five-year bonds. That appeared to kill the idea that Greece may not be able to tap bond markets for much-needed cash. Yet two days later the yields on Greek government bonds jumped to their highest since 1999. The sell-off renewed fears that markets may lose faith in Greece altogether. Talk of a bail-out by its euro-zone partners is growing.
