U/21: SMFC 1 v 2 N. Coburg SC
U/21: 2008 Premier League FOXTEL CUP
24-2-2008
The winner takes it all
The game, played on 24 February at Bob Jane Stadium, was very enjoyable to watch as both U/21 teams played an open game, with good combinations and with many clear chances that could have given spectators abundant goals.
The home team played this game with low passes and many first-rate combinations, which were admirable until they reached the opponent’s 16 meter box. However, the team was incomplete in scoring more than one goal. At the end of their actions, the attackers did not show the required skills and concepts to hit the opponent’s target and conclude. Many obvious chances ended fruitless and the final ball was badly delivered on some occasions.
The visitors from North Coburg SC attacked mainly with lovely precise long balls, giving them “a tick” in most of their play. Their attackers showed more than a desire to win and converted twice, leading SMFC 2:0 ten minutes before the end of the first half.
It was the midfielder Andrew Bourakis who scored the only goal for SMFC with a nice volley which made the result 2:1 as the first half finished.
In the second half the result did not change, even though many chances were not scored by either team. The SMFC boys gave their maximum to level the game in the second half but the opponent was more organized in their defensive sector, counter-attacking swiftly and dominating with their physical strength, which many of their matured players possessed.
Both teams maintained the same tempo from the start of the game to the end.
Through my point of view, the visitors deserved the win as they played very well, but a draw was more acceptable considering the way the scenario occurred: one of Coburg’s defenders hit one of the SMFC’s attackers from behind, who fell sharply down to the ground.
The referees, officiating in this match, were incompetent only in this moment and they “filed” the scenario as “suspicious”. That, lovely set of combinations introduced on video camera, is clear evidence how professionally the defender covered his guilty action: it easily could be pointed as a penalty in SMFC’s favour.
