U/21 FOXTEL Cup
SMFC 0 – 3 VIS
On Monday, 24 March, SMFC played VIS at Bob Jane Stadium, a postponed game due to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. As both were equal on the classification with five points apiece, the game was important to gain some positions on the ladder.
VIS dominated the game from beginning to end and created countless clear chances but could not convert more than three times. The SMFC players were slow on the ball, which seemed like it was ‘being played in slow motion’ to the spectators. They made many mistakes and showed no teamwork especially in the midfield sector. By holding the ball unnecessarily, not delivering it at the right time when the attackers requested or passing it in a wrong direction, the SMFC team only created two chances throughout the game.
The first half-finished 2:0 in favor of visitors, with a nice first goal scored, but being gifted a second goal as the ball, which was under the SMFC defender’s control, reached one of the VIS attackers’ foot during his sliding tackle and hit the back of the net by chance. In the second half, VIS scored a plausible goal, as the cross and the header from each player were both hit in perfection.
VIS showed greater talent than the SMFC boys by gaining superiority around the field and were somehow helped by the wrong formation that SMFC played with in this game. Some of the SMFC players were visibly tired and surprisingly in panic whenever on the ball, not marking properly and not following up on their mistakes.
VIS deserved the victory and SMFC should be happy with this result.
SMFC boys have hopefully learned something from their weak performance in this game. They must be more relaxed, more creative and work as a team if they want to succeed, leaving aside those tendencies shown by some players to earn points for their own interest.
Good luck in the next match.
