WELCOME TO THE OAKLAND GREEK FESTIVAL
Welcome to The Real Greek Experience:
Oakland’s Greek Festival 2008!
GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF THE ASCENSION
4700 LINCOLN AVENUE, OAKLAND, CA 94602, 510-531-3400
MAY 16, 17, 18 2008
It is with great joy and excitement that we invite you to experience our Greek culture this weekend. The Greek Festival began 37 years ago to share with our Bay Area community the truest of Greek passions: hospitality, food, music, and religion. Today, this event is thriving from the works of our own Oakland Greek Community, and it is through their loving efforts that we offer you these passions! Our wish is for you to know the real Greek experience!
Hospitality. Greeks are hospitable in nature, and it is this giving spirit that makes our Festival come alive! What may even surprise you is the sight of our young and old working side by side. Our young children are thrilled to dance for you, while our experienced yiayias (grandmothers) offer you a taste of traditional spanakopita (spinach pie) and favorite pastry recipes from their homeland.
Food. You will simply have to eat your way from one end to another. We have put our heart, soul and favorite Greek seasonings into our many delicious foods for you. From gyros and lamb sandwiches to wine and Frappe beverages, we want you to taste Greece!
Music. The intoxicating sounds of Greece will be evident throughout the Festival. Live music will entice you to dance, or you may choose to watch one of our many Greek dancing groups perform traditional village dances.
Religion. The heart of our Festival is the Cathedral itself. Both literally and metaphorically, the Cathedral serves as the center foundation of our religious community. We invite you to tour our beautiful dome-shaped church.
This year is unique … Our very own Reverend Father Thomas Paris will celebrate his final year at our Greek Festival as our beloved Proistamenos (head priest). After 37 years of service to our Oakland Parish, we thank Fr. Paris for putting his heart and soul into making the Festival what is it today. He has taught us to dream big, and showed us that good food and fellowship can make for a beautiful weekend! Thank you Father Tom!
What makes this Festival so special is that you will have an opportunity to experience the best of Greece with its natives, your friends and neighbors. We invite you to celebrate our own Greek culture with us! We hope that you leave feeling a little more “Greek” than when you arrived! Opa!!
Efxaristo poli (Thank you very much),
Yanni Limnios
