Greek beaches are amongst the cleanest in the world

If you like going to the beach, Greece is the place to be. With 430 of their beaches awarded with the “Blue Flag”, Greece sits in 2nd place out of 40 countries in “Blue Flag” criteria.

The “Blue Flag” program is an international symbol of quality and perhaps the best-known environmental symbol in the world. Established in 1987, it awards Blue Flags to beaches and marinas complying with its strict regulations. It is not enough for the sea to be clean; there are 29 criteria related to beach cleanliness, swimmer and visitor safety, environmental information, site information and environmental protection of the beach.

In 2005, Greece received 383 “Blue Flags’ and in 2006, Greece received 428.

Spain came in 1st place this year with 455 “Blue Flags” awarded.
