More of a physical game
Heidelberg Warriors SC 2 v 1 South Melbourne FC
(At Olympic Village Stadium: Seniors)
The first traditional opening game between Heidelberg United SC and South Melbourne FC this time finished 2:0 for the home team. Scoring one goal either side of halftime, Heidelberg accumulated its first three points of the 2008 FOXTEL Cup.
Not going into specific details, the game was more of a physical affair: played in congested areas and with unaddressed high balls from both teams, rather than a technical and open one.
This year’s clash lacked in many ways considering previous clashes, where spectators left happy at the style of football played.
However, both teams created many clear chances to deepen the result, but attackers were unable to convert. SMFC players scored the first goal; then Heidelberg equalized before the first half ended. In the second half, Heidelberg scored again and their players and supporters left the field very happy with the win.
The atmosphere was exciting and fans supported their teams from the start all through the end, even though they expected more from their teams.
